Batch Insert Images to Google Sheets (Updated Macro)

Download The Macro Here (2026.07.15)

Whats changed?

This version does the same thing as the macro shown in the tutorial video, but with a few tweaks to make it more reliable, especially if you’re inserting a lot of images.

Chrome is now activated directly

In the tutorial macro, I used Activate Last Application. That worked fine for me, but a few people said they had issues with it.

In this updated version, the macro explicitly activates Google Chrome, which is the browser I use. If you use something else, just change that action to Firefox, Safari, or whatever your browser of choice is.

Making this step more specific just makes the macro behave more consistently on different machines.

A change to the Insert image step

You no longer need to screenshot the Insert button in Google Sheets.

I now use keyboard shortcuts instead:

Control + Option + I opens the Insert menu
Press G to go to Image
Press I to select Insert image in cell

This removes the need for the Insert screenshot and all the down-arrows that were pressed, so the macro is slightly quicker and a bit less fragile.

Google Sheets now has a new UI for its Insert image page, which you can see below.

This new UI broke my old macro, so I had to adapt it. You now need a screenshot of the Upload button to make it work.

Then drag the screenshot into the new Move and Click action in your macro.

You’ll also still need the other two screenshots from the tutorial: the Browse button and the cloud with a tick icon at the top of Google Sheets.

Smarter waiting when images are loading

In the original macro, the file path is pasted and Return is pressed to jump to that folder. At that point, the image isn’t actually selected yet.

The 0.5 second pause was there to give the machine a bit of time to get to the folder and select the image. After that, Return is pressed again to select it, which will bring it into the spreadsheet as seen in the screenshot below.

This worked fine for me, but people who’ve used the macro have said that as you add more images to a Google Sheet, it can take a bit longer to get to the file, more images, a little more lag, which is why the macro can break.

Because of this, you’ll now need to screenshot the blue Open button as seen in the screenshot below. The button only turns blue once an image is selected, so I have used this screenshot the same way as we used the cloud with a tick at the top in the original macro. If the macro sees it on screen, it will safely move onto the next action. This stops it from pressing Return too early and breaking.

This change is mainly about future-proofing if you ever need to upload 80+ images to your spreadsheet, which reportedly is when my old macro could start to go wrong.

Small tweak to the final down-arrow

Instead of just sending a generic down-arrow as the last action, it now sends it directly to Google Chrome (you can change this to whatever browser you’re using). I’d never had issues with this myself, but this tweak seems to fix the problem some people were having where an image would get pasted into a cell that already had an image.
